Citizens for Halifax promotes and motivates civic engagement in order to build the most vibrant and liveable city in Canada.
Citizens for Halifax will achieve this by engaging in community dialogue to understand the important issues and develop key positions. And we will encourage participation in the democratic process so that these key directions can be acted upon. Ultimately, we are tapping into people’s civic pride and asking them to get actively involved in our city’s evolution.
Citizens for Halifax encourages and supports candidates for civic office. We advocate intelligent, thoughtful, fiscally responsible civic government. We want Halifax to have a bold and confident vision of its place in the world and to embrace its future while being respectful of its past.
The Citizens of Halifax Society is a non-partisan association with the following goals:
- To build a city with a vision of its place in the world, where people from all ages, backgrounds and socioeconomic status feel heard and represented.
- To attract and support the election of the most suitable candidates for civic office.
- To create engagement among all citizens for the future of our city through commitment to civic responsibility of all citizens resulting in actions that reflect the true needs of the diverse needs of our citizens.
- To understand and address the needs of disadvantaged groups.
- To build an economically vibrant community that maintains the integrity of Halifax’s heritage and embraces a future of growth which supports the vision of the Society.
The following principles guide our civic candidates and members:
- Build healthy relationships with all levels of government to maximize the resources available to the citizens of Halifax.
- Build a city that is culturally diverse and inclusive
- Build a city which is safe and accessible
- Build a city which welcomes and embraces innovation and creativity.
- Build a city which is financially and environmentally sustainable
In achieving the above goals and within the philosophy of the Society, we believe that Halifax will be the most liveable and vibrant city in Canada within the next decade.
